SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Pattern template
  • Scissors
  • White embroidery thread
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery needle
  • Water soluble marker or chalk
  • Wonder Under, 5"x 8" piece
  • Iron
  • Light denim tote
  • Dark denim fabric
  • Pattern fabric A
  • Pattern fabric B

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Iron the 5"x 8" piece of wonder under to the back side of pattern fabric A. Cut the fabric to 5"x 8".
  2. Iron the fabric onto the front of the denim tote bag, on the bottom left corner.
  3. Trace the pattern template design onto the dark denim fabric. Place fabric in an embroidery hoop. Embroider the design with the white embroidery thread using a running stitch. Do not embroider the outer rectangle of the design.
  4. Trim the fabric leaving a 1" border around the design. Fold the edges under right up to the edge of the design and iron flat.
  5. Embroider the top of the rectangle, securing the edge down. Do not embroider the other three sides yet.
  6. Place the piece on the middle of the tote bag, overlapping the other fabric patch, with the finished embroidered edge up. Embroider with a running stitch around the last three sides, sewing the piece to the tote bag.
  7. Use the white embroidery thread to stitch + shaped stitches all over the pattern fabric A patch.
  8. Cut a small rectangular hole near the top of the bag. Scratch the edges of the hole with a fingernail to rough them up. Place a piece of pattern fabric B to the inside of the tote, behind the hole. Embroider around the edge of the hole with a back stitch, securing the fabric to the bag. Embroider another line 1/8" from the back stitch with a running stitch. Trim any extra fabric from the patch on the inside of the bag.
