SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yard of two solids
  • Medium-weight non-woven fusible interfacing (7"x 12" piece)
  • Bias tape maker or extra fabric to make your own bias tape
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Fitted cloth mask pattern
  • Cricut® machine
  • Cricut iron-on vinyl
  • Iron or Cricut EasyPress™_x000B_

DIRECTIONS:(1/2" seam allowance)

  1. To make the bias tape:
  2. Cut dark denim fabric on the bias in two 1 1/2" wide 36" long strips. If you do not have the length to create 36" strips, connect pieces together using a diagonal seam to minimize bulk.
  3. Feed the fabric strip into the wide end of the 12mm bias tape maker, pulling it through the narrow end with a pin if necessary. As the fabric comes through the narrow end, iron the folded edges into place. After ironing folds into the entire length of the strips, fold each of the strips in half, creating single fold bias tape.
  4. To construct the mask:
  5. Download pattern PDF file and print.
  6. With fabric folded, cut 2 pieces of light denim and 2 pieces of dark denim for lining and outer - main pattern for mask.
  7. Cut 4 - interfacing
  8. Fuse interfacing to main 4 pieces of mask.
  9. Match contrasting denim pieces of fabric mask right sides together, and sew the outer curve using 3/8" seam allowance
  10. Repeat with remaining two pieces.
  11. Open pieces and press both seam allowances to the right.
  12. Match front and back pieces right sides together.
  13. Pin and sew around the top and bottom of the mask, leaving openings on both of the side edges.
  14. Turn mask right side out and press.
  15. Top stitch around the top and bottom of the mask, 1/8" from the edge.
  16. At this point, you will have two raw edges to your mask in the area close to the ears. Trim 1/4" from both of those edges to make them neat and ready for bias tape.
  17. Open your bias tape and cover each of your raw edges with a bias tape strip, pinning the bias tape closed into place. When placing the bias tape, position it so that only 16" of the tape is hanging off the bottom of your mask, leaving a longer length for the top. This is because you will need longer strings to tie around the top of the head, and less length for the base of the neck.
  18. Stitch closed the bias tape along its length, stitching it onto the mask in the process.
  19. Use the Cricut Design Space software to create the desired words for your, making sure they will fit within the width of your mask.
  20. Use a Cricut Maker or Cricut Joy to cut out the words you've chosen. Be sure to mirror the image and place your Cricut vinyl decorative side down on the mat for holographic/glitter vinyl and shiny side down for solid color vinyl.
  21. Peel off the vinyl around the letters and cut out each individual letter. Place the letters onto the mask and iron into place. You may need to iron the left half of your phrase first, then fold the mask and iron the right other side. Peel off the plastic backing after the vinyl has cooled slightly.
