BAT HEADPIECE

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • DIY Full Face Paper Mask
  • Black Felt
  • 12 inches 1/8" Black Elastic
  • 1/4" Stretch Velvet
  • Fabric Glue and Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Low Temp Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks
  • Pattern Templates (see Get Patterns tab)

DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. Mark and cut off bottom portion of mask below eye openings, making a V shaped point on the forehead portion between the eye openings. Discard bottom portion of mask.
  2. Use a paint brush to put a full layer of fabric glue on the front of mask. Place a rectangle of stretch velvet that is slightly larger than the mask over the glue and gently stretch and press into place. Be careful not to press too firmly or the glue will seep through to the front of the fabric. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.
  3. Once dry, trim excess fabric around the outside of mask leaving 1/2" of excess to fold over to the back side of the mask. Use a paint brush to apply glue to the back of the mask along the outside edge and fold over excess fabric to complete a finished edge.
  4. Cut 2 pieces of felt using Pattern A. Cut 2 and 2 REVERSE of stretch velvet from Pattern B.
  5. Using a paintbrush, apply glue to one side of the felt ears, making sure to reverse one of them. Allow to dry for several hours. Once dry, paint glue around the outer edge of opposite side of ears except for the bottom edge, and fold over excess velvet. Allow to dry. Once dry, cover entire frontside of ears with glue and velvet cut from Pattern B. There should be excess overhang of velvet. Allow to fully dry, then carefully cut away the excess velvet from the front of the ears, leaving an overhang along the bottom edge of the backside of the ears.
  6. Hot glue ears in place. On the inside of mask, use hot glue to glue the excess overhang from the backside of ears. This creates a finished edge and more secure bond of the ears to the mask.
  7. On inside of mask, hot glue the ends of a 12" piece of 1/8" wide black elastic approximately 2" up from the bottom of both sides of the mask.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Keep a damp rag or paper towels handy when gluing to quickly clean up any glue that gets on the front of the velvet.
