SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 7" x 14" x 1" Serving Board
  • 8 1/2" x 11" Transfer paper, Black
  • Painter's Tape
  • Ruler
  • Pen & pencil
  • Wood Burner with Cone Point
  • Pliers
  • Fine Sandpaper
  • Small Pine Wood Scrap (for test burning)
  • Optional: Food grade Mineral Oil & Cloth (to apply)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Handwritten recipe will layout best if hand transferred onto a lined sheet of paper the shape and size of the serving board. If that is not possible, scan and enlarge handwritten recipe to fit onto board leaving at least 1/2" blank space on both sides of board. On recipe paper mark horizontal lines under handwriting then mark a vertical center line. On the serving board measure to find the center from side to side. Mark a light pencil line from top to bottom at the center. Tape transfer paper, ink side down, on face of board. Cut edges of paper to expose edges of board and center line. Tape enlarged recipe wrong side down centered on top of transfer paper. Lay a ruler along the horizontal lines under the writing. Shift the recipe so the writing runs as close as possible level on the board. The center line of the recipe may need to shift from the center of the board if the original handwritten recipe was not written on lined paper. Tape recipe to board. With a pen, write over the recipe words. Lift one edge of recipe paper and transfer paper to check that the letters are transferring well. Before removing papers, lift and check to make sure that all words and symbols have been transferred. Remove papers. If the transferred lettering is light, trace over the lettering with a pencil.
  2. Install a cone point on the wood burner using pliers. Write some words on a scrap of similar wood to test handling the wood burner. Keep the tip of the wood burner horizontal to the wood surface. Wood grain is irregular so burning into the surface needs to be done with flexible pressure. Use a light touch and short strokes. This will make it easy to lift the tip away from the wood surface quickly. Burn the lettering. Sand with the grain using a fine grit sandpaper to remove any transfer paper markings and pencil lines.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Lay a board of similar thickness next to the bottom edge of the cutting board. This will give a surface to rest your wrist when burning lettering close to the bottom edge of the board.
  • Apply a food grade Mineral Oil to wood surface to prevent board from becoming dry. Dry boards may crack.
