SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Wood lamp kit
  • Lamp fixture with switch on cord
  • Lightbulb, LED
  • Acrylic paint, 6 colors plus white
  • Deco Art, Dura Clear, Satin Finish
  • Sandpaper, fine
  • Emery board
  • Paintbrushes, 1" synthetic, 1" foam
  • Paint mixing containers, 7
  • Optional: Painters tape, blocks of wood, hammer

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Assemble bottom frame of lamp. Keep the top horizontal rib of bottom frame separate.
  2. Paint: Apply thin coats of paint. Do not paint tabs and holes for tabs. Paint all parts white using a synthetic brush. Place two coats of white paint to cut edges. Let dry.
  3. Mix 6 colors. Label containers, 1 (lightest) to 6 (darkest). Sand all surfaces of white painted parts.
  4. Color coat all parts with two coats of paint. Paint top frame with #1. Paint bottom frame and top horizontal rib of bottom frame with #6. Paint discs, four of each color. Let dry.
  5. Optional: On top frame, place painters tape angled from the straight, back edge of the top slot, down to the inside edge of the frame. Paint one section at a time. Below the tape paint a darker color. Repeat. The frame is not highly visible below the top slots.
  6. Use a foam brush to apply 1-2 coats of varnish to all parts. Varnish seals the acrylic paint and it will make it easier to dust the lamp.
  7. Attach top horizontal rib to bottom frame. Insert cord of light fixture through top hole.
  8. Settle fixture in wood circle. Insert lightbulb. Construct top frame. Attach top frame to bottom frame as per manufacturer’s directions. Press in discs starting with the lowest slots. Press four #6 discs in the lowest slots, every other vertical frame part. Continue, four #5 discs, four #4 discs, etc.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Remove any paint that has settled on the tabs or in the holes for tabs by sanding with an emery board or a small strip of sandpaper.
  • Slots are snug. If difficulty pressing parts together tap gently with a small hammer. Lay a small cloth over area to be tapped to avoid damaging paint coating.
