SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 16"x 20" Framed Wood Wall Sign
  • Wooden Chips: 1 1/2" Diameter
  • Acrylic Paint: Purple, White, Soft Light Orange
  • Paintbrush
  • 1/4" Foam Core Board, 1 Sheet
  • 1 Piece of White Cardstock 4"x 14"
  • 2 Pieces of Balsa Wood 4"x 14"
  • 3 Packets of Wooden Pegs 1" Tall
  • Wood Glue
  • X-acto Knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Optional- Small Hand Saw or Scroll Saw
  • 1 Tube of Quick Grip Glue
  • Purple Adhesive Vinyl
  • White Adhesive Vinyl
  • Cardstock: Pink/Red, Chocolate Brown, Yellow, Metallic Silver, 6"x 6" Pieces of Each Color
  • White cardstock (14"x 4")
  • Cricut Machine
  • Tombow Glue with Green Cap

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Paint the whole wood wall sign purple and allow to dry.
  2. Paint the wooden pegs white and let them dry.
  3. Paint the wooden disks soft orange and let them dry.
  4. Take the two pieces of balsa wood and glue them together. Place heavy books on top of them while they are drying to prevent warping.
  5. On the foam core, draw the half-circle top and cut it out on a protected surface with an X-acto knife. Divide the half-circle into even wedges with the top wedge centered over the middle line of the half circle.
  6. With your x-acto knife, cut out 6 long triangles out of the purple vinyl to be 2.35" where they will be at the top of the half circle. Find the middle of the bottom of the foam core half circle. Place the bottom left and right triangle first with the edge flush with the bottom edge of the half circle. Let the ends at the top hang over.
  7. Next position the remaining triangles in place before attaching them to the foam core board. Use small post it note to hold them in place while you do a test run to figure out the placement.
  8. Once you have them evenly spaced on the half circle, start at the bottom of the next triangle and attach it next to the point at the bottom in the middle of the foam core board. Slowly remove your backer paper as you press the triangle in place. Repeat this with the other triangles as well.
  9. Once you have completed attaching the purple adhesive triangles, flip the board over and place a bead of Quick Grip glue at the bottom of the half circle.
  10. Attach the half circle onto the top of the wood sign frame. Let it dry.
  11. Draw seven 2 1/8" rectangles on the balsa wood strip.
  12. Use one of the wooden chips to trace a circle extending 1" into the center of each rectangle. Then use the X-acto knife or scroll saw or handsaw to cut out the circle. Paint the inside scallop half circles with the purple paint and let it dry.
  13. Cover the wood strip with white cardstock. Trim out the half circles out of the cardstock to match the cut-out area on the balsa wood.
  14. Using your triangle, draw vertical lines in between each scalloped half circle.
  15. Use your purple vinyl and cut pieces to apply on top of the white cardstock to alternate, purple, white, purple, white.
  16. Mark the locations for the white wooden pegs. Begin at the center rectangle and measure 2 1/2" up from the center of the cut circle, and mark. Make three more marks on either side of the center, each spaced 2" from each other.
  17. Start the next line of wooden pegs, 3 1/2" above a side edge of the center rectangle. Mark the rest of the row, with each mark spaced 2" from the first mark.
  18. Continue making the rest of the marks, measuring each row 3 1/2" from the previous row of marks. Make five rows, leaving about 5" of open space at the top.
  19. Use the Quick Grip glue and place a very small dab on the bottom of each peg when you set it on top of the mark. Hold it for a few seconds and make sure it looks vertical.
  20. Your Cricut machine to create the title. Use the font Arial black and apply an offset to the type to get the outlined look. You want to leave about 1 1/2" spacing on each end of the word.
  21. Use your Cricut machine to cut out open circles to be apply to the orange round wooden disks to give them more interest.
  22. Last, make your candies. On your Cricut machine, find free images in design Space to create the hard candies, and suckers. The mini chocolate bars are created by making a rectangle on the Cricut mahine in the silver foil and then a smaller one in the colored cardstock. Glue them together to make a mini chocolate bar. Assemble the candy before attaching them to the final piece. Place very small amount of glue to the backside of each candy and gently place it onto the purple and white strip. Try not to move the candy once you have placed it on the board to avoid glue smears.

JOANN HACKS:

  • To create a large, symmetrical half-circle, align the foam core with the top of the sign board. Push the pushpin into the foam along the top center edge. Tie a string onto the pushpin and tie a pencil onto the end of the string. Tighten the string until the pencil tip is lined up with the side of the sign board. Then use the pencil and string to make an arc that meets up with the other side edge of the sign board.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from disappointing project I have saved these instructions for over a year. Now that I am ready to start I am having trouble finding the supplies. Very frustrating.
