SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 1/2yd to 2/3yd World Map Collection fabric (Be sure to get one repeat in cut. You may need extra length.)
- 1/2yd each of flannel animal print from collection and coordinating flannel for backing of toys
- 1yd white background of World Map Collection
- 1 1/2yd contrasting flannel for backing & binding
- 1 1/2yd batting
- Glue
- Basic sewing supplies
DIRECTIONS:
MAT
- Cut one approx. 14"x 23" World Map for center making sure you get one repeat cut.
- Cut two 11"x 23" for top and bottom and two 11"x 32" for sides.
- Sew the top and bottom to center.
- Sew the sides to the mat.
- Layer back, batting and top of mat together and pin.
- Quilt the top as desired.
- Square up and trim the layers.
- Cut 3"x WOF from flannel for binding to measure 4yds.
- Cut 10-12 strips from flannel 1 1/4"x 8" for toy strips.
- Fold the 10 strips in half lengthwise and press. Fold edges into center and press again. Fold together and press, again.
- Top stitch on both sides of strips.
ANIMALS
- Cut out flannel animals, staying close to the shape of the animal, and cut same shape from coordinating flannel.
- With RST, stitch around animal print leaving an opening at top for turning.
- Turn and stuff.
- Insert the 8" strips into the top of the stuffed animals about 1/2" and place a small amount of glue inside.
- Pinch top and hand stitch closed catching the strip in place.
- Arrange the toys around the mat and baste strips in place having the cut edges along the cut edge of mat and the toy hanging down over the mat.
- Sew binding around mat catching the strips into the stitching.
- Fold the strips with the animal toys over binding (so they face away from mat) and stitch in place along binding to be sure that the toys stay attached.
