Beginner Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Drum Lampshade, Light Color
  • Ribbon
  • Trim Scissors
  • Rotary Cutter & Cutting Board or Scissors
  • Sewing Tape Measure
  • Clear Grid Ruler
  • Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks
  • Pencil
  • Large Safety Pin
  • Optional: Test Weaving, Cardboard 4-5" Larger than Circumference and Height of Shade Measurements, Pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. For vertical ribbons measure height of lampshade plus lengths to wrap around both the upper and lower rings of the lampshade. Use sewing tape measure to determine circumference of lampshade. Determine pattern of ribbons to fill out the circumference and height measurements.
  2. Test weaving: Mark height and circumference of shade on cardboard. Cut vertical ribbons 4-5" longer than finished cut length. Lay ribbons on cardboard to fill out circumference. Pin the ribbons to the cardboard at the top and bottom of each ribbon. Cut horizontal ribbons 4-5" longer than finished cut length. Weave between vertical ribbons. Once pattern is determined cut lengths of vertical ribbons to original measurement.
  3. Attach vertical ribbons at the top inner edge of lampshade first. Place the first ribbon centered on the overlap seam of the lampshade. Measure and mark the top edge of the shade for the first ribbon. Lay the lampshade on the side. Apply a small bead of hot glue to the WS of one cut end of ribbon. Place the edge of ribbon over the wire frame. Flip the shade on the side. Lay the grid ruler on side lining up with the edge of ribbon, squared with the top edge of the shade. Mark the location on the bottom edge of the shade. This will ensure that the ribbon is vertically attached to the shade. Flip the shade to bottom up. Pull the ribbon tight matching the mark. Apply a small bead of hot glue to the WS of the cut end of ribbon and wrap the end around the wire of the bottom frame. Repeat.
  4. Add horizontal ribbon. Start weaving the ribbon at the back seam of the lampshade. Temporarily attach a safety pin to an end of ribbon to assist in weaving the ribbon under vertical bands. Leave a 2" or longer tail of ribbon at the start and end of each horizontal band. Repeat. Tighten and attach horizontal ribbons starting with the top or the bottom band. Tuck one tail end of horizontal ribbon under the vertical ribbon centered on the back seam of the lampshade. Hot glue in place. Pull the ribbon tight settling the location of the band with the other ribbons. Overlap the end over the first end, behind the vertical ribbon. Hot glue in place. Trim excess ribbon so the cut end lands behind the vertical ribbon. For horizontal bands that cross on top of the vertical band at the back seam overlap the ends under the vertical band adjacent to the centered band. Place hot glue between the overlapped ends. Trim excess ribbon so the cut end lands behind the vertical ribbon.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When creating patterns with ribbon weaving, sections that are adjacent that loop the same may shift when pulled tightly to secure. Adjust prior to adding hot glue.
  • Drum lampshades may slightly taper from top to bottom. The difference in circumference will not be noticeable after ribbons are woven.
  • To cover any imperfections in the vertical ribbon raw ends apply a horizontal band of 1/4" ribbon around the circumference of the shade.
