Woven Ribbon Placemats

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd white cotton fabric
  • 18yds total of 1/2" & 1" ribbon (various colors & designs)
  • 1yd of 17" wide fusible webbing
  • 15"x 19" cotton batting
  • Iron & ironing surface
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: Use 1/2" seam allowance
FINISHED SIZE: 14"x 18"
  1. For the front base and back of placemat, cut 2 of the white fabric 15"x 19".
  2. Cut ribbon into 15" and 18" pieces.
  3. Cut webbing 15"x 17 and 19"x 17".
  4. Follow manufacturer’s directions and fuse ribbon strips to webbing.
  5. NOTE: Fuse ribbon one at a time to the webbing, laying edge to edge being careful not to touch bare webbing with the iron.
  6. When all of the ribbon strips are fused onto the webbing, peel each piece off of the paper backing.
  7. Lay the 19" ribbon strips out horizontally in a pleasing order.
  8. Lay the 15" ribbon strips out vertically in a pleasing order.
  9. Weave the horizontal and vertical ribbons together.
  10. Place woven ribbons onto the placemat front base.
  11. Straighten weaving out and follow manufacturer’s directions to fuse ribbons to the front base.
  12. Pin or baste cotton batting to WS of placemat front base.
  13. With RST, stitch front base to back, leaving an opening for turning.
  14. Trim batting close to stitching.
  15. Clip corners and turn RS out.
  16. Press placemat and slip-stitch opening closed.
