SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 sheet wood, finished board 17 1/2""x 19 1/2"
  • 4 pieces of wood, 1" square x 76", 2-18", 2-20"

  • Hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • 1 small can of gray wood stain
  • 1 small can of walnut wood stain
  • 1 disposable small brush
  • 2 disposable medium brush
  • 8 pks of wood disks
  • 2 larger wood disks
  • 1 can of acrylic satin clear spray
  • 1 jar of matte Mod Podge

  • Masking tape
  • 3 tubes of Quick Grip glue
  • 1 pk of resin hardener, 2 half gallons
  • 12 wooden popsicle sticks
  • 12 medium-sized plastic disposable cups
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bag
  • Plastic gloves
  • Hot glue gun/glue gun sticks

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Assemble the 1" wood pieces to create a frame with the hammer and finishing nails. You may need to drill pilot holes first on the ends of the wood pieces to make the frame.
  2. Place a bead of glue around the wood base and insert the wood base into the frame. Let it dry.
  3. On the backside of the frame, place a stream of hot glue all around the wood base to prevent leaking of the resin later when it is poured.
  4. Place a strip of masking tape on top of that seam as well all around the frame and press firmly.
  5. Take half of the wooden disks and stain them dark. Stain the rest of the disks the gray stain. Let them dry overnight.
  6. On the inside base of the frame, stain half of it with the darker stain and the other half with the gray stain in the design of a Yin Yang. Let it dry overnight.
  7. Take the wooden disks and on the backside paint two coats of Mod Podge, letting them dry between layers.
  8. Flip them over and spray two coats of the acrylic spray on the top surface.
  9. Create your design by placing the disk in each colored area. Arrange the disks by size, as if you were doing a puzzle.
  10. Mix up a small batch of the resin, about 1 cup. Lift out the first row closest to you and place it outside of the frame.
  11. Pour the resin in the open area and carefully replace the wooden disks in place.
  12. Do this same process for the next row. You will keep mixing up small new batches, removing the disk, then replacing then back into the fluid resin. Wiggle the disks as you replace them to cement them in place. Do this process across the board. Use a heat gun to pop bubbles.
  13. Let it dry overnight.
  14. The next day, again mix a small batch in a plastic cup, pour in-between the wood disks. Only pour the resin until you have gone to the top of the disks. Do not pour onto the top of the disks. Keep filling between the disks in small areas until you have gone completely across the piece. Use the heat gun to pop the bubbles.
  15. Let it dry overnight.
  16. For the final coat you will mix up a bigger batch because you will have one pour. Make 3 cups of mixed resin. Slowly pour it on top of the piece. Use your heat gun to pop bubbles. Do not get too close to the resin with the heat gun, you will cook the resin. You have about 15 minutes to pop bubbles before the top layer is set.
  17. Let it dry for 2 days.
  18. Install a picture hanger in the backside.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Don’t make your batches of resin too large.
  • Use new plastic cups for every batch.
  • Wave the heat gun quickly across the fluid resin to pop bubbles.
