SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sewing machine
  • Leather or Heavy Duty sewing machine needle
  • Sewing notions
  • Rotary cutter & mat
  • Scissors
  • Seam ripper
  • Zipper
  • Trim
  • Tassels
  • Decor fabric
  • Pillow form

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 1/2" seam allowance.
  2. Determine the size of pillow form to be used.
  3. Cut one piece of fabric 1" wider and 1" longer than the size of pillow for the back of the pillow.
  4. Determine the layout of the trim. Wide, heavy trim may be sewn together RST from the back following the lines of the thick pattern of the trim.
  5. Add panels of fabric on sides of trim adding 1" on either side of the fabric for the SA. Width will be the same as back panel. The fabric and trim panel will add up to the length of the back panel. The end with the zipper should be fabric, not trim. To further secure the fabric to the trim fold the seam of fabric and trim to the fabric side, from the RS topstitch close to the fold of fabric.
  6. With front and back panels RST, on the zipper end mark 1" from either side. Sew 1/2" from raw edges to the 1" mark on both sides. Baster between the 1" marks. Open the panels and lay the zipper face down centered on the open seam. Sew zipper. Flip and remove the baste stitch. Open zipper.
  7. Attach tassels see directions below.
  8. Place panels RST and sew the three raw edges together. Zigzag or double stitch to finish edges. Trim corners and edges. Turn RSO. Press out corners using a chopstick or dowel.
  9. To attach large tassels:
  10. Use a hair tie or other elastic to wrap the fringe of each tassel to reduce the bulk during installation.
  11. Set a pin in the hanger of the tassel 1" from the knot at the top of the tassel. After the zipper is installed lay the back and front panels RST. Set a tassel inside the two panels with the hanger pointing out one corner. Pin the hanger to the panels with the pin in the hanger lining up with the raw edges of the fabric. Sew each in place. Pin along two opposite sides and sew the 1/2" SA. Sew the remaining edge together tucking the tassels inside the pillowcase as needed. Turn RSO. Remove ties from fringe on tassels.
