SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 1/4yd 100% cotton fabric
  • 1/8yd cotton duck canvas
  • 18" fabric ties, 4
  • Soft fabric paints in assorted colors
  • Pencil or disappearing marker
  • Pattern template (download PDF under print description above)
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF” below Print Description on the right.
  2. Cut 1 of pattern out of Canvas- this will be the center front piece.
  3. Cut 2 of pattern out of Cotton fabric – these will be the top and bottom pieces.
  4. Cut 1 of the pattern on the fold of cotton fabric, aligning the fold with the dashed line- this will be the center piece on the inside of the mask.
  5.
  6. With right sides together, match one curved edge of the center canvas piece to the top cotton piece. Match the other curved edge of the canvas center to the bottom cotton piece right sides together. Sew both curved edges using 1/4" seam allowance.
  7. Opening these pieces, your mask should look like this – bottom cotton piece, center canvas piece, top cotton piece.
  8. Now take your final cotton piece (the one cut on the fold) and match the curved edge (opposite the fold) right sides together with the remaining curved edge of the bottom piece. Sew this curved edge using 1/4" seam allowance.
  9. Next, match the folded edge of the inside center, with the remaining curved edge of the top piece. These pieces will only match at the corners, about 1” on each side. Sew across this edge with 1/4" seam allowance. Since these pieces only match at the corners, there will be a gap in the center- this will be the opening for our pocket. The stitching that is on the top only, will be our guide for pressing in the seam allowance in a later step.
  10. Now all 4 mask pieces should be connected in a continuous loop – bottom piece, canvas center, top piece, cotton inside center and back to the bottom piece.
  11. With the mask still wrong side out, fold the mask so that the top and bottom pieces are folded in half, and the center pieces meet in the center.
  12. Match seams together at the unfinished sides, and pin. Insert ties into the center section of the mask along the seam. Sew the side seams with ¼” seam allowance.
  13. Turn mask right side out.
  14. Turn seam allowance from top flap under ¼” and edge stitch to close the opening.
  15. Fold top and bottom edge in along the curved seam and press.
  16. Top stitch around the entire mask using 1/8” seam allowance.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Make a pattern for the filter by reducing the mask pattern by 1/2" on all sides.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks like a mouth-only mask! Anybody can tell by looking at this picture that it’s waaaaay too short from top to bottom for a normal adult face. I printed out the pattern to compare to my others. Confirmed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Will you be breathing in paint ? I haven’t made this mask. However, I would caution Anyone using paint on masks, whether it’s a good idea since you’re breathing any paint fumes For possibly hours at a time. May want to stick to pretty cotton fabrics and sew beads and buttons to upscale the mask. Just my 2 cents

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fitting Mask I love this mask. I've made quite a few of them for myself and friends. They all love them. They are so easy to personalize. I've made bias tape out of fabrics and created the designs to complement them. So nice to be able to personalize a mask.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canvas hand painted mask with filter pocket For those of you who are having trouble with this pattern, there is a tutorial on an eariler Joann's email. It is the one with a green canvas center and printed fabric top and bottom portions with ties. This vidio has you draft your own pattern.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Confusing At first, I was very excited to find a curved mask without a center seam. However, the instructions are very confusing and unclear. A video tutorial would help tremendously; I'm a visual person. There's no mention of how to make the ties--how wide to cut strips, length, etc. The size seems awfully small for an adult. This needs a lot of improving!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from GAPS! We know that any gap in a mask reduces its efficacy by 50% - or more. The photo of the model wearing it, shows huge gaps around her nose. That is unacceptable! Please be sure to put wiring in the nose bridge of any mask you make. This virus is extremely transmissible. Also, the latest study (April 2020) shows that a layer of chiffon, silk, or a synthetic silk encased like an interfacing makes a huge difference. It is thought that the electrostatic properties of those fabrics is what makes the difference. As science is ever self-correcting, no doubt they will improve on these findings, but the studies at present are quite impressive.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Cover Face Adequately I have seen these on people, you might as well not wear a mask. Does not cover nose adequately!
