SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
DIRECTIONS:
- 100% cotton fabric
- 100% coordinating cotton fabric
- 1/4" elastic
- Pattern template (download PDF)
- Basic sewing supplies
- Rotary cutter & mat
DIRECTIONS:
- Using a rotary cutter, cut two downloaded pattern pieces for the exterior of the mask, and two pattern pieces for the lining.
- With right sides together, stitch along the curved edge only for the exterior pieces and then the lining pieces.
- Clip the curves and press the seam to one side for both the exterior and lining pieces.
- Layer the exterior and lining pieces together, right sides together, matching up the edges. Pin the pieces in place along the edges.
- Stitch along the top and bottom edges of the layered pieces with ¼” seam allowance, leaving both short ends unstitched.
- Flip the newly joined pieces right side out and press.
- Top stitch along the top and bottom edges of the mask 1/8” from the edges.
- To create the casing for the ties, fold down the unstitched ends 1/4” one time, and then fold another 1/4" to hide the raw edge. Pin or clip in place then top stitch close to the inside edge of the fold.
- Use a safety pin to feed bias ties or elastic loops through the newly created casing. Knot the ends of the bias ties to keep them from coming out of the casing. If using elastic, knot it to your comfort level where it would loop behind your ear, then slide the knotted part of the elastic into the casing to hide it.

Tweaked this pattern to make it even easier
This is a good pattern. As others noted, you have to enlarge the pattern print-out to get the mask patterns to the sizes indicated (7" high for adults; 5" high for kids). Instead of making a separate lining, though, I ironed fusible web onto the wrong side of my fabric before I cut it according to the pattern. This stiffens the mask up nicely so you won't need to sew a lining, unless you choose to. I also used elastic in place of the ties.

Great pattern
Maybe if people learned how to ENLARGE the pattern, they'd know how to make the mask without leaving whiney reviews ;)

Reviews not taken seriously
Appears Joanns does not take the reviews seriously. All complaints the same - pattern and directions do not match up (going back 10 months) and yet this is still not resolved.

Video
I downloaded the pattern, but I wish this came with a video. It would have been a lot more self explanatory.

Why 17 sheets of paper to print?
I attempted to print this pattern anyway ... til I saw it was going to take 17 sheets of paper. Really. That's a waste ... big time. I was going to print only the pattern but never saw it. I can trick my printer into printing smaller but that would have still been a waste. Why does it want to print all the reviews, too.

Here we go again!
Just about every time I see one of these spotlighted projects that I’d like to try, I find that the instructions and patterns are incorrect or missing. Not sure why I bother!
