Advanced Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Black exterior fabric
  • Black thread
  • Sewing machine
  • PVC pipe (25' total)
  • PVC fittings:
  • T fitting - 2
  • Side outlet elbow fitting - 4
  • 45 degree fitting - 6
  • 90 degree fitting - 2

  • PVC glue
  • Hand saw
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Black matte spray paint
  • Iron
  • White water-soluble pencil
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use the template guides that show how long each PVC piece should be and how it should be connected using the fittings.

  2. Glue each connection in place with PVC glue in a well ventilated area.

  3. Spray paint the PVC frame with matte black spray paint and set aside to dry.

  4. Use a water-soluble pencil to mark the fabric with the dimensions provided on the template guide. Cut along the lines.

  5. Layout the fabric on the structure rightside down and pin in place.

  6. Fold under the outer sides of fabric 1/2" that will not be sewn together. Sew along the edges to make a nice finished edge. Sew the seams together to create the fabric cover.

  7. Cut 1/2" strips of fabric 6" long. Sew 2 strips together at one end, spaced around the inside seams where they meet the PVC structure. These strips will be used to tie and secure the cover in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As a Seamstress at Age 13, I appreciate JOANN’s Knowledge! I repaired my Backporch Awning with Heavy Thread at Least Once. A Storm Ripped my Awning Off a Few Years Ago, and although my Repairs Reattached Original Awning to Steel Frame, I have searched for Instructions as to how I could Purchase Canvas and Make a New Awning without Removing the Steal Frame screwed into the Brick at my Backdoor. JOANN’s Instructions have Inspired Me to Once again use my Knowledge of Textile Construction to Begin This Project. The Manufacturer of Previous Canopy is no longer in Business, but the Steal Frame is Extremely Sturdy and was Professionally attached to my Brick House as a Canopy for Back Door. Once I purchase Sufficient Canvas after meticulously Measuring canopy Frame.., I know JOANN’s Fabric/Textile Store will have not only the Canvas needed, but perhaps any Additional Trim To Enhance and Secure the Canvas to Frame. Once I accomplish This Project I will Add a Photo of its Completion! The Homes in my 1930’s-1940’s Homes have Similar Awnings of which many required repair or Replacement!
