Pink Solid Smocked Rayon Challis Fabric

On trend wonderful dresses!
First of all, I love rayon fabric. This fabric is lightweight but not transparent. My picks did not require a lining. They drape beautifully. I was excited to see this line of rayon smocked-top fabrics in a multitude of delightful prints and solids. Smocked topped clothing is so popular right now. How to pick? Red was the choice of my daughter. She wanted a go-to red dress for summer. I chose a natural linen color for myself. I always pre-wash and dry my fabrics in a washing machine and dryer. These rayon pieces wash and dry beautifully. They came out relatively wrinkle free. A quick pressing out of the laundry makes the fabric very smooth. They resist wrinkling during sewing and wearing. The fabric sews easily. No runs from needles and pins. Raveling is not an issue. I do serge all my seams, however.
The staff at Joann knows to tear this fabric when "cutting" to get a straight edge because the fabric shifts easily. The reviewer who received a shark-tooth edged piece of red fabric from an online purchase must have had a novice employee at the cutting table. A cut like that is not the norm for Joann.
Anyway, back to my lovely piece of red fabric. How to decide yardage? FYI, the fabric is measured along the smocked edge. The strategy is to get a snug fit at the smallest portion of your upper torso. If you are short-waisted and petite, this measurement may be at your waistline. Hold the fabric up under your armpits and see where the smocking falls on your body. FYI, the smocked section measures 9.5-inches deep. I used the waist measurement minus an inch or two as the cut width to create snugness (negative ease). Since the smocking stretches a lot, it will stretch over your bust. It's better to buy too much than too little. You may want to buy extra fabric depending on length and design details such as tiers, straps, or sleeves.
Another thing to consider in your design process is dress length and sweep diameter. My daughter is tiny (waist 23”), so tiers were needed since the top of the dress measured less than a walkable sweep for a skirt. If I simply sewed the entire dress straight down from the top measurement of 20 inches, the skirt sweep might have been a bit restrictive for walking especially as a maxi. I’m not a risk taker. Three solutions to create walkability for a tiny top measurement: above knee length, gathered tiers, or a seam slit below the knees.
To create tiers with ¾ yard of fabric I purchased, the dress could not be a maxi. As a reference, my daughter is 5’2.” For the top section of the dress, I cut (using thread pulling as a guide) the fabric at 9” below the bottom of the smocking and sewed the side edges together forming a side seam. Then I cut (using thread pulling as a guide) the leftover section in half parallel to the salvage edge of the fabric producing two strips measuring approximately 18” x 53.” One of these strips was shortened to 22” and sewn onto the ends of the other strip creating 75” circular section. This section was gathered and sewn onto the raw edge of the top section.
The leftover piece (approximately 18” x 31”) that was cut off from the shortened strip was used to create the bottom ruffle and shoulder straps. For the straps, I cut a 2” x 31” strip from the remnant. This piece was folded in half lengthwise, sewn with a ½” seam allowance, and turned inside out thus forming a 1/2” wide strap. The strap was cut into two. For the ruffle, the remaining piece was then divided into three sections measuring approximately 5 1/3” x 31.” These strips were sewn together along their shorter edges creating a circular section approximately 90” in diameter. This section was gathered and sewn onto the raw edge of the second section of the skirt.
Because of the stretch, the straps must be positioned on the bodice when the person is wearing the dress. Use a strap length that will flatter the wearer and keep the bottom edge of the smocking parallel to the floor all the way around the body. Note: smocked tops tend to drop lower in the back especially on larger busted wearers so make sure your straps pull up the back of the bodice. Mark the best place for each strap on the bodice and mark the spot on each strap where it meets the bodice. Take off the dress and make sure the straps measure the same length as each other (unless your body is asymmetrical) and that the placement of the straps squares up with each other in regard to the sides, middle front, and middle back of the bodice. Fold over the ends of the straps and sew to the inside of the dress at the marked points on the bodice and on the straps.
If you are taller than 5’2” and/or want a longer dress with tiers or want wider straps, you should buy more yardage. On the solids, the fabric looks the same in all directions, so you can make tiers running the width or length of the fabric. If you have a print, consider directionality.

Poor quality
I was very excited about the color and feel of this fabric. I made a dress and the fabric draped over my pregnant belly so nicely and was very comfortable. I wore it out for one evening and it pilled where my stomach had touched the table and where the linen napkin was on my lap to the point of looking like I wore the dress 50 times. It was disheartening to put the effort into making a summer maternity dress just to have it look cheap after one use.

Description says smocking width is 12”. It is 9, barely.
Stop lying in your fabric descriptions. Your customers do notice - and it means we start to look elsewhere for products.
