Plaid Mini Skirt & Matching Padded Headband

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Burda Pattern 6247 or use your favorite skirt pattern​
  • 1 1/2yd fabric for skirt and headband
  • Thread
  • 9" invisible zipper
  • ​3/8yd lightweight interfacing
  • 1 1/2" headband
  • ​2"x 18" piece of 1" foam
  • ​1/2yd of 1/2" ribbon
  • Glue gun
  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:
​SKIRT NOTE:
  1. Project image is View A (shortened 4 1/2" for mini skirt length) with the waistband from View B 1.
  2. Choose size and shorten length of pieces 1 and 2 by cutting or folding on the horizontal line on the pattern tissue.
  3. Fold the side edge of lower portion in line with the top portion.
  4. Check that side seams of 1 and 2 match and are the same length as the rest of the skirt.
  5. Cut out pieces 1, 2, 3, and 4 from fabric.
  6. Match plaids at side seams.
  7. Cut 3 and 4 from interfacing and iron on to fabric 3 and 4.
  8. Transfer tissue markings to fabric.
  9. Follow step 1 to stitch pleats and sew right side seam of skirt.
  10. Follow instructions for view B for waistband, zipper and finishing left side seam.
  11. Clean finish lower edge and hem skirt.
​​HEADBAND:
  1. Glue foam to headband.
  2. With scissors, trim width of foam even with headband and taper thickness to 1/2" near the ends.
  3. Measure distance around headband at center.
  4. Cut fabric this measurement plus 1/4" x length of headband plus 1 1/2".
  5. Beginning at center, wrap fabric to the back and glue at center back.
  6. Edges will just meet or slightly overlap.
  7. Trim fabric as the sides narrow.
  8. Trim and fold edges in at ends.
  9. Fold ends of ribbon in and glue over seam on back.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:
  • Batting may be used instead of foam; glue several layers on the headband to form 1" of padding.
  • Cutting the material for the headband on the bias (diagonally) will allow for more stretch and ease in covering the headband.
