SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Liquitex Acrylic Gouache Colors:
  • Titanium White
  • Cadmium Free Red Light
  • Primary Yellow
  • Bright Aqua Green
  • Liquitex Palette Knife, Size 12 or Similar
  • Liquitex Basics Bright Brush, Size 6 or Similar
  • 10"x 10" Canvas (pre-primed)
  • Palette Paper
  • Pencil
  • Paper Towels
  • Optional: Ruler, Gloves

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Prepare work surface and assemble supplies.
  2. Use the ruler to measure 1 1/2 inches from the edge of each side. Do this twice on each side.
  3. Use the ruler to line up the two 1 1/2 inch marks and draw a line. This will create a square inside the canvas edges.
  4. Use the outline provided for a letter or use the edges of the pencil line square as the border for sketching the letter. Erase and adjust as needed. Be sure to estimate the dimension of the letter in the measurement as well.
  5. Squeeze out about 1/2 teaspoon of Titanium White onto the palette paper.
  6. Add one tiny dot of the Cadmium Free Red Light and one tiny dot of the Primary Yellow. This mix will make a light cream color.
  7. Use this color to paint the top side or main body of the letter. The crisp edges of the bright shaped brush will help fill in the shape cleanly.
  8. Next, squeeze out about 1/2 teaspoon of the Bright Aqua Green onto the palette and begin to use it to fill in the darkest dimension of the side of the letter.
  9. Then, take 1 part of the remaining Bright Aqua Green and mix it with 1 part of the Titanium White.
  10. Use this mix to paint in the lightest value of the side dimension of the letter.
  11. Next, take about 2 parts Cadmium Free Red Light and mix with 1-part Bright Aqua Green. This mix will create the red shadow of the letter.
  12. Apply this darker red mix in the shadow areas of the letter.
  13. Then, squeeze out about 1 teaspoon of the Cadmium Free Red Light and use it to paint the remaining white and background of the canvas. The bright brush edge can be used to clean up any edging on the letter.
