Naked Cake

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cake recipe
  • Cake pans
  • Floral
  • Cake rounds
  • Buttercream icing
  • Gel food coloring

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Bake cakes in 8" cake pans. Use your favorite cake recipe.
  2. Allow to cool completely then level cakes by cutting rounded tops off with knife.
  3. Add buttercream to cake round, placing first layer of cake on top. This will keep the cake from shifting while icing.
  4. Cover the top with a layer of buttercream and then add second cake layer. Continue layers of buttercream and cake.
  5. Then add a thin layer of icing to the sides of the cake. This layer of icing should be very thin and will hold in all crumbs.
  6. Allow cake to chill before adding final layer of buttercream. This layer can also be thin to give the “naked" cake effect.
  7. Finally, add floral detailing in different gel colors. Try burgundy and purple with a pop of contrast such as green leaves.

    8. Use dowel rods the same height as your bottom tier to support top tier of cake. Tip: It's easier to place rods in a chilled cake.
    9. Add buttercream icing in a different purple shade to give a “drip" effect on the edges of each tier.
    10. Finally, add floral detailing in different gel colors. Try burgundy and purple with a pop of contrast such as green leaves.
