SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 43"x 43" square of flannel for backing fabric
- 43"x 43" square of cotton quilt batting
- 1/3yd flannel for binding
- 1yd solid flannel for four triangles
- 1/2yd flannel for each stripe (8 fabrics)
- Sewing machine with walking foot
- Basic sewing supplies
- Ruler
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Iron
- Quilt template (1/4" seam allowance included)
- Fabric marker or tailor's chalk
DIRECTIONS:
- Dimensions are 42"x 42".
- Cut (2) 36"x 36"x 60" triangles out of “triangle" flannel. Cut 60"x 3 1/2" rectangles for strips 1/4 on diagram 1 and strip 6 on diagram 2 (will need to piece fabric). Cut (2) 3 1/2"x 30" rectangles each out of fabrics 5, 7 and 8 of diagram 2.
- Lay batting on top of backing flannel, wrong-sides together. Machine baste around edge to flatline these pieces together.
- On top of batting, draw one diagonal line from top left corner to bottom right corner of square.
- Follow diagram 1 for fabric numbers. Center strip 1 onto center of diagonal line. Lay strip 2 to this piece, right-side together and stitch the right long edge together through all 4 layers. Press 2 away from 1. Repeat process with strip 3 (only on opposite of side 1) and 4 afterward.
- Sew long sides of triangles 5 and 6 to sewn strips, wrong-sides together, through all layers. Press triangles out. Baste around edges to secure pieces. Trim excess fabric from edges.
- On both sets of strips 5, 7 and 8 turn over one short edge 1/2 and press. With tailor's chalk or removable fabric marker, draw line diagonally from bottom left corner to top right corner.
- Center 7 strips on center line with folded over edge lining up against strips 1 and 3. Sew strips 8 to right long side right-sides together through all layers. Press strips 8 toward right corner and turn under seam allowance of long, raw edges. Sew strip 6 to edge strip 7 through all edges and press towards left corner. Sew strips 5 to strip 6, right-sides together. Press strips five toward left corner. Turn under seam allowance on raw long edges of strips 5. Clip into seam allowance of strip 6 at raw edge and turn under seam allowance.
- Topstitch all unsewn edges through all layers, close to edge.
- True up and trim quilt to 42"x 42". Cut 1/2" of 2" wide bias Piece together to form one long strip (1/2" seam allowance included). Sew binding to outer edge of quilt, right-sides together, mitering corners as you go. Turn under 1/2" of unsewn edge and hand sew to backing to finish.
