DIRECTIONS:
STITCH EXPLANATION:ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right hand needle; insert left hand needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
NOTES:
Hat is worked in one piece in the round, beginning on a circular needle then changing to double-pointed needles.
Top of Hat is shaped by working 2 simple decreases.
HAT:
With circular needle, cast on 96 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Ribbed Edge
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg.
Change to working in St st worked in rnds (knit every rnd), and work until piece measures about 10" from beg.
Shape Top of Hat
Notes:
On the next rnd, you'll be placing st markers for the decreases used to shape the top of the Hat. We suggest you use different color markers than the beg of rnd marker.
Change from circular needle to double-pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.
Set-Up Rnd: K2tog, *k20, ssk, place marker (pm), k2tog; rep from * twice more, k to last 2 sts, ssk - you will have 88 sts.
Decrease Rnd: K2tog, *k to 2 sts before next marker, ssk, slip marker, k2tog; rep from * twice more, k to last 2 sts, ssk - 80 sts.
Rep Decrease Rnd until you have 16 sts remaining.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail into blunt needle, then draw through remaining sts. Pull to close top of Hat, then knot.
FINISHING:
Weave in ends.
