Intermediate 3-5 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Thick & thin macramé cord
  • Wooden dowel
  • Wooden beads
  • Scissors
  • Navy blue fabric dye
  • Plastic bucket
  • Water
  • Plastic gloves
  • Paper towels

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Begin by cutting thick macramé cord into 5' pieces - cut at least 25-30 pieces, depending on how wide you would like the wall hanging to be.
  2. Create a reverse larkshead knot by folding 5' piece of cord in half and attach to wooden dowel by putting ends of cord through loop and securing in place; repeat until width of dowel is covered with about 2"-3" left on each end.
  3. Dye the thick macramé cord by filling plastic bucket with navy blue dye and water; follow directions on dye bottle to properly prepare the dye. (Wear plastic gloves.)
  4. Dip thick macramé cord into dye, and avoid getting dye on the top of the cord or the wooden dowel.
  5. Pull cord out of dye and use hands to squeeze excess dye out of cord.
  6. Allow cord to dry for at least 24 hours.
  7. Cut one 30" piece of thin macramé cord.
  8. Cut fifty 4' pieces of thin macramé cord.
  9. Fold 4' pieces of cord in reverse lark's head knots by folding in half and attach to the 30" piece of cord by putting ends of 4' cord through the loop and securing in place; repeat for all 50 pieces of thin cord
  10. Starting with the farthest cord on the left, create a vertical half hitch knot by wrapping the cord on the left (knotting cord) all the way around the knot-bearing cord, creating a loop by bringing it under the knotting cord and back over itself. Repeat 4 times across. Skip across 5 cords and repeat process but create knots that go in the left direction.
  11. Repeat previous step across the dowel and continue process down the cord, alternating directions to create a unique pattern.
  12. Strand wooden beads on cord as desired.
  13. Attach thin cord macramé pattern over top of navy blue fringe by tying knots at ends to the wooden dowel.
