SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 yd gray fleece for body
  • 1/4 yd plush pink felt for spikes
  • 9 x 12 felt pieces; one each of the following colors: ocean blue, navy blue, candy pink, gold, prickly purple and baby pink
  • 1/4 yd Pellon 809 Decor Bond fusible interfacing
  • 32 oz. Poly-Fil fiberfill
  • Pink and gray thread
  • 2 oz. tube Alene's Super Fabric Adhesive
  • Letter Templates
  • Sewing Machine
  • Pins, Sewing Needle, Scissors
  • Optional: Freezer paper, tweezers, yard stick

DIRECTIONS:(approximately 40" x 14")

  1. Trace letters onto corresponding colored felt and cut out. (See tips)
  2. Cut one piece 42" x 30" from gray fleece; cut 9- 4" pink felt squares; cut 9- 3 1/2" Decor Bond squares.
  3. Cut all squares in half diagonally. Iron an interfacing triangle to each felt triangle, matching long edges. Place two felt triangles, wrong sides together, and sew 1/4 inch along the two short sides.
  4. Place a marshmallow size piece of Poly-Fil into the point of each triangle. Begin sewing long edge of first triangle closed, 1/4 inch from long edges, stopping 1 inch from end. Add the second triangle, overlapping the first triangle by one inch. Continue overlapping and sewing spikes together until the nine triangles form a chain.
  5. Center the straight edge of the chain along the 42" side of the gray fleece, right sides together. Pin and sew 1/4 inch along raw edges. Fold up the other long edge, right sides together. Matching the edges, sew in a 1/2 inch seam, forming a long tube. Turn right side out.
  6. Lay out pillow with spikes at the top and smooth. Arrange letters 5 inches from the bottom, starting and ending about 2 1/2-3 inches from each side. Glue letters in place and let dry.
  7. Turn pillow inside out. Sew short sides 1/2 inch from the edges, leaving a 6 inch opening in the center of one side for stuffing. Turn right side out. Stuff and sew closed by hand.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • Letters can be traced onto freezer paper and ironed onto the felt. After cutting, the freezer paper easily peels off.
  • Check the iron temperature on scrap pieces of felt. Too high heat can melt some types of felt.
  • Tweezers can be useful in transferring a letter with glue on the back onto the fleece.
  • Lay a yard stick along the 5 inch placement line to keep letters straight.
  • Pull the Poly-Fil apart to fluff it up before stuffing. This will prevent a lumpy pillow.
