DIRECTIONS: Seams are 1/4" unless noted.
  1. Download adult mask pattern.
  2. Cut 2 Adult mask (follow bias grain lines).
  3. Cut 2 Adult and Child mask cotton.
  4. Cut 2 Childs mask (follow bias grain lines).
  5. Cut 2 of 7" elastic for Adult mask.
  6. Cut 2 of 6" elastic for Child mask.
  7. Cut 1 front and back each lining for Adult and Child tie.
  8. Cut 1 front and back flannel interlining: for each Adult and Child tie.
  9. Sew mask:
  10. Center front seams matching plaids. Do not topstitch. Press seams open. Sew cotton center front seams.
  11. Tack elastic to top side and bottom sides of mask.
  12. Pin right sides together across top sides and bottom, leaving an opening for turning. Turn right sides out, press and hand stitch opening closed.
  13. Sew Neckties:
  14. The sewing instructions are the same for the Adult and Child. Trace on tissue paper, the front and back outer tie following bias grain lines. Trace flannel lines front and back following bias lines. Trace lining lower pieces front and back following bias lines.
  15. Trim of 1/8" lower lining outside seams only. Stretch lining when sewing to fit the tie ends. This is to keep the lining from peeking out when turned. Sew front and back lining to plaid. Sew flannel pieces together, lay down the center. Do not stretch the flannel, baste down the middle of tie. The flannel will lay in between plaid and lining at the bottom. Look at diagram to where flannel ends (before the points).
  16. Fold over one side of the tie to the center, laying seam allowance flat. Fold the other side over to meet the other seam allowance. Hand stitch tie closed using a looser invisible stitch. Leave a small loop and the end of hand stitching. Leaving the loop and a looser stitch can stretch when tying the tie and bias give. Otherwise the stitch will eventually break.
  17. You can put a small loop inside (7 1/2" up from the point) the front tie to hold the narrow part of the tie when wearing. Hand stitch loop through under layer turning under 1/8" on each side.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Matching plaid is essential for a tailored look.
  • The interlining can be a woolen fabric or flannel, must be cut on the bias for a soft shape.
  • Steam necktie when finished, do not press as it will flatten the necktie.
