The magnifier is actually 1.75X (it's right on the box but not on the website) with a spot magnification of 3X but the spot is almost useless. I have this exact lamp but the website led me to believe that I was getting a lamp with a higher magnification (which is what I was looking for.) Oh, what a waste of time - ordering, picking it up, now returning it. It could have been avoided with a clearer description.

I would like more of it to be the strength of the small area. If you don’t need as much help with things like linen, you’ll be fine.

This lamp w/ magnifier has been a tremendous asset with my applique and needle work. Thank you Ottlite for giving me back one of my greatest enjoyments. Loved it soooo much bought a second light for my mother. She was so excited to be able to read again after her eye surgery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't work without this light I must have had this model for over 20 years. I didn't know at the time I purchased it how invaluable it would be. I haven't even changed the bulb! My only complaint is that the poll is in sections that you screw together. Over time the connection seems to weaken so we sliced a piece of PVC pipe and wrapped it around the pole and secured it with a couple of zip ties. Fortunately the PVC pipe is a similar colour as the pole so it's not too obvious.

The magnifying lens is extremely helpful, I certainly rely on it more than I imagined I would. The magnification area is large so not only can you see fine stitches and work on intractable knots, you can also see the surrounding area which is helpful for perspective. Both the illumination and magnification areas are adjustable so you can raise and lower as well as get a lot of range from left to right. This lamp, with the base being heavy and the stalk and lamp and lens being relatively lighter seems less prone to tipping than some other OttLite models. A definite upgrade to the crafting arsenal!

I would move it to and from my sewing machine depending on what I was working on. I'd put my foot on the base when adjusting the light just so it would not tip over. I finally took the magnifier off because I got tired of fighting with the positioning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes it possible for me to do so many things Several years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Yet, about a year ago when I was looking to start crafting (again after years away when I got diagnosed with my eye disease), I found this lamp. Because of this lamp I am able to create the most beautiful crafts and I am most proud of my Amigurumi. If it was not for this lamp, I could never crochet with any dark colors, use less than a size H hook and never have the confidence to get back on the horse and give it a go one more time. Then I found how useful this lamp is for reading medication directions, washing directions on new clothing, just anything you need to see better. For people with MD the light is extremely important to go along with the magnification. My only request would be a little bit larger circle of area and a little bit larger circle of area for the 4x. I can't say enough because the Ottlite changed my attitude, increased my confidence and now I am able to have more fun than any person should be allowed to have :-) while i work in my craft room.
