DIRECTIONS:


SLIP-IN STYLE BANDANA:


Size Cut Square & Interfacing Corner Fold
XS 7"x 7" 1.5"
S 9"x 9" 2"
M 12"x 12" 2.5"
L 14"x 14" 3"

  1. Cut fabric and medium weight interfacing based on the size of your pet.
  2. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric with iron.
  3. Fold square in-half from the pointed corners.
  4. Press.
  5. Open and measure in from the corners based on your pet's size.
  6. Fold both corners in at this line and press.
  7. Reference the chart for how much to fold.
  8. Top stitch along the folded edge.
  9. Trim off excess fabric.
  10. Fold the bandana with the right sides of the fabric together and pin.
  11. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch along the raw edges.
  12. Turn the bandana so the right sides are out.
  13. Press.
  14. Use a ruler and fabric pen to draw a line along the bottom of the collar opening (this will create a casing for the collar)
  15. Edge stitch along the two bottom edges of the bandana.

ELASTIC STYLE BANDANA:

  1. Cut square fabric and medium weight interfacing based on the size of your pet.
  2. Reference the chart above.
  3. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric with iron.
  4. Fold square in-half from the pointed corners.
  5. Press.
  6. Open and measure in from the corners based on your pet's size.
  7. Fold both corners in at this line and press.
  8. Reference the chart for how much to fold.
  9. Top stitch along the folded edge.
  10. Trim off excess fabric.
  11. Fold the bandana with the right sides of the fabric together and pin.
  12. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch along the raw edges.
  13. Turn the bandana so the right sides are out.
  14. Press.
  15. Set to the side.
  16. Cut out your strip of fabric.
  17. Fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides of the fabric together.
  18. Pin.
  19. Stitch 1/4" seam down the long raw edge.
  20. Turn the strip right side out and press flat creating your elastic tube.
  21. Cut elastic to correct length.
  22. Thread the elastic through the tube using a safety pin.
  23. Line up the raw edge of elastic to each raw edge of the tube and stitch to hold in place.
  24. Tuck the raw edge of each side of the covered fabric elastic into the open sides of the bandana approximately 1/4" and pin.
  25. Stitch over your earlier top-stitch lines to hold into place.

BOW-TIE:


NOTES:
If you are making JUST the Velcro bow, you only need to cut out the bow, interfacing and center sections.
If adding the matching collar, proceed to cut out the collar fabric, elastic strip fabric and piece of elastic.

  1. Cut your bow/interfacing and bow center fabric based on the size chart.
  2. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric with iron.
  3. Fold your larger piece lengthwise with the wrong sides facing each other to create a center crease.
  4. Press.
  5. Open and refold the long sides in to meet at the crease you created.
  6. Press again.
  7. Now fold the piece in half the other way to create a center crease again.
  8. Press.
  9. Open and refold the shorter sides into the middle to meet at the crease you just created.
  10. Press again.
  11. Pinch together the middle to create the bow shape.
  12. Clip together to hold.
  13. Prepare a needle and thread.
  14. Use this to stitch together the middle section of the bow (going back and forth and then wrapping around to hold together)
  15. Lay out your bow center piece on your work surface.
  16. Fold in the shorter sides about 1/4" and press to keep them flat.
  17. Fold the section lengthwise and press to create a center crease.
  18. Open and refold the long sides so that they meet at the crease.
  19. Press.
  20. Press.
  21. Edge stitch along both long edges of the strip.
  22. Lay the strip on your workspace.
  23. Place the fluffier size of the velcro square near the edge of the strip (1/8" from short edge) and stitch into place.
  24. Cut Velcro down if necessary, you don't want any hanging off the edge.
  25. Fold strip in half.
  26. This is the loop that will go around the middle of the bow.
  27. Press, but don't sew it together yet.
  28. On the opposite side and edge of where you just attached the Velcro, stick the rougher Velcro square.
  29. Unfold and then stitch down.
  30. Refold the strip in half again and stitch together along the short edge where they meet, just next to the edge of the Velcro.
  31. Fabric will be very thick there, take your time.
  32. The loop is created.
  33. Slip the bow through this loop so that it sits in the middle.
  34. Pin the strip on either side of the bow to hold it in place.
  35. Stitch a line back and forth where the pins sit on both sides.
  36. The bow can now be used with a pre-existing animal collar.
  37. Just wrap the velcro middle around the collar to hold in place.
  38. If you would like to make the matching collar then keep going with the directions.

COLLAR:


  1. Reference the measurement chart to cut out collar fabric/interfacing, elastic strip fabric, and the elastic piece.
  2. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of the collar fabric with iron.
  3. Fold in the shorter sides of the collar piece about 3/8" and press to keep them flat.
  4. Fold the piece lengthwise and press to create a center crease.
  5. Open and refold the long sides so that they meet at the crease.
  6. Press.
  7. Fold the long sections together again to create a strip with no raw edges.
  8. Press.
  9. Edge stitch along both long edges of the strip.
  10. Grab the elastic strip fabric.
  11. Fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides of the fabric together.
  12. Pin.
  13. Stitch 1/4" seam down the long raw edge.
  14. Turn the strip right side out and press flat creating your elastic tube.
  15. Cut elastic to correct length.
  16. Thread the elastic through the tube using a safety pin.
  17. Line up the raw edge of elastic to each raw edge of the tube and stitch to hold in place.
  18. Tuck the raw edge of each side of the fabric covered elastic into the open small sides of the collar approx. 1/4" and pin.
  19. Straight stitch down the side of the collar to hold into place.
  20. Attach your bow to the collar.

BIG BOW:


NOTES:
If you are making JUST the velcro big bow, you only need to cut out the bow/interfacing, tail/interfacing, and middle sections.
If adding the matching collar, proceed to cut out the collar fabric, elastic strip fabric and piece of elastic.

  1. Cut your bow/interfacing, tail/interfacing and bow center fabric based on the size chart.
  2. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric with iron.
  3. Fold your bow piece lengthwise with the wrong sides facing each other to create a center crease.
  4. Press.
  5. Open and refold the long sides in to meet at the crease you created.
  6. Press again.
  7. Press.
  8. Open and refold the shorter sides into the middle to meet at the crease you just created.
  9. Press again.
  10. Pinch together the middle to create the bow shape.
  11. Clip together to hold.
  12. Prepare a needle and thread.
  13. Use this to stitch together the middle section of the bow (going back and forth and then wrapping around to hold together)
  14. Set aside.
  15. Gather the tail fabric piece.
  16. Fold the piece lengthwise so that the right sides are facing each other.
  17. Use your ruler with degree marks to cut out 30 degree lines on both short sides of the folded piece.
  18. The folded edge will stay the same length.
  19. Start your ruler there and cut the angle so that the raw edge will now be shorter.
  20. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch along the raw edges.
  21. Leave a 2" opening on the long raw edge for turning.
  22. Turn the tail right side out.
  23. Press.
  24. Edge stitch around the perimeter of the entire piece.
  25. Pinch together the middle to create the bow tail shape.
  26. Clip together to hold.
  27. Prepare a needle and thread.
  28. Use this to stitch together the middle section of the tail (going back and forth and then wrapping around to hold together)
  29. Gather the bow and tail pieces.
  30. Use thread or a glue gun to wrap around BOTH the bow and tail sections to hold them together in the final shape.
  31. Lay out your bow center piece on your work surface.
  32. Fold in the shorter sides about 1/4" and press to keep them flat.
  33. Fold the section lengthwise and press to create a center crease.
  34. Open and refold the long sides so that they meet at the crease.
  35. Press.
  36. Fold the long sections together again to create a strip with no raw edges.
  37. Press.
  38. Edge stitch along both long edges of the strip.
  39. Lay the strip on your workspace.
  40. Place the fluffier size of the velcro square near the edge of the strip (1/8" from short edge) and stitch into place.
  41. Cut Velcro down if necessary, you don't want any hanging off the edge.
  42. Fold strip in half.
  43. This is the loop that will go around the middle of the bow.
  44. Press, but don't sew it together yet.
  45. On the opposite side and edge of where you just attached the Velcro, stick the rougher velcro square.

  55. If you would like to make the matching collar, refer to the collar directions under the bow-tie section.

NECKERCHIEF:


Size Cut (2) Strips & (1) Interfacing
XS 23"x 1"
S 27"x 1.5"
M 31"x 2"
L 34"x 2.25"

  1. Cut fabric strips and medium weight interfacing based on the size of your pet.
  2. Reference the chart above.
  3. Adhere the interfacing to the wrong side of (1) of the fabric strips with an iron.
  4. Place strips down on your work surface so that the right sides of the fabric are facing each other.
  5. Pin.
  6. On each short edge, mark the middle of the strip with a pencil (this will be the pointed end of the neck tie)
  7. Next measure in 1" in from the short edge.
  8. Place two marks on either side of the long edge to mark this 1".
  9. Draw lines from the 1" marks to the middle mark.
  10. This will create the point.
  11. Cut off excess fabric on each corner that will no longer be needed as you stitch around the edge.
  12. Use a 1/4" seam allowance to stitch around the entire edge of the strip, but make sure to leave about 2" open on one side of the strip for turning.
  13. Turn the strip so that the right sides are out.
  14. Press.
  15. Edge stitch around the collar.

JOANN HACKS:

  • As you go along with the directions, make sure to measure your own pet and modify the lengths of the collar to fit your animal better (if necessary)
  • It helps immensely to have a turning tool, especially with the strips that need turning on small and extra small animals.
  • If you are pressed for time or don't want to hand sew the middle of the bow or tail together at the center, you can use a hot glue gun to keep it together.
  • It will be covered by the looped fabric piece, so it doesn't matter what it looks like underneath.
