need help linei think this product was very helpful, and the instructions were easy to read. i agree that the prong side of the pearl were hard to keep in place, but overall easy. the only complaint i have is that there is no help for mistakes. I need to remove one of the snaps because the prongs didn't match up.

It's not that difficultAll the problems I've had were because of my own errors loading snap components that weren't of the same set (they all look the same when the cat spills them on the floor). Otherwise, I can't imagine getting enough torque to tightly secure the snaps with one of the smaller plastic devices. It's easy and comfortable to use. My only complaint is that you have to be very careful putting in the spiky side of the snap because those prongs are sharp!

the bane of my existenceThis tool was an exercise in frustration! All of the snap I tried came out crooked, or with prongs poking out. The instuctions are very vague & offered no help at all.
don't waste your $$

poor quality, difficult to use, frustratingI do use this tool for setting snaps because it does work, after a fashion, but it was very frustrating. First, the instructions are terrible! I disregarded them and worked it out for myself. Look carefully at each component, and think about what side of each part goes together, and what part 'shows' on the fabric, and figure it out. It takes some concentration and your best spatial reasoning skills but it can be done. However, even when you do it properly, the tool simply doesn't work very well. It takes a lot of hand strength and finesse to set the snaps properly without getting any prongs smashed in the wrong direction. Dritz could easily improve the design and quality to make a tool that works. Shame on Dritz!

UnhappyI was able to figure out how to apply the snaps and they looked nice but a couple of them came out of the fabric the first time they were unsnapped.

happyI have used this tool for a number of years after trying several weeker brands and have found it easy to use, as a person making lots of western wear could not be happier with the outcomne and find the snaps stay together and work very well. The clothing is worn daily not just on occasion.

Poorly designedI'm not sure if the problem is this tool or that Dritz snaps are of poor quality. Aligning the snaps wasn't difficult, but because the fulcrum of the tool is so close to the crimping end, it does not apply pressure evenly to the snaps. This means that the prongs don't fold over as symmetrically as they should. This is forgivable with the front (decorative) side of the snap, which is thicker, but with the bottom part of the snap this tool often causes the prongs to drive right through the metal of the other half of the snap. This has two results-- a sharp edge that could catch on other things in the wash (if not injure the wearer), and a projection that interferes with the functioning of the snap. But is is solidly made & quiet to use.

Great Tool!!This tool works great!! I don't why other people are having problems. I've been putting snaps in everything. It quickly and easily sets those ring snaps for my kids clothes.
The only problems I encountered were my own errors - like putting in the snaps backwards, etc.

Not Worth ItI have used this to put the snaps back on onsies and they were distorted. Ruined more onsies than saved. Tried to use with the bigger (enclosed) snaps and those too were bent up. Not worth the money nor aggrevation!

I hope third time is the charmI was pleased with the first couple of snaps i set with this item, anything that minimizes the chances of hitting my thumb with a hammer is good news to me. However i was very frustrated when the darn thing broke leaving me stranded with a half a project to complete I managed to get myself to fight through saturday morning frenzy and exchange it only to get back home and have the same thing happen. still have not finished my project!!!!!;-(

Fairly easy if you find different instructionsI just used this tool for the first time and I like it just fine. The problem is that the included instructions are horrible, so I did a search online and found better instructions at www.sewmodestclothing.com. After following her instructions, I was able to use this just fine on some hemp/cotton diaper fabric.

Not For All SnapsI purchased this product to secure large amounts of smaller snaps to fabric because a hammer and a peice of plastic does not do the trick. I was told this would by the craft store??? It did not do the size I needed but worked well enough on the larger snaps included. No help for me but I would purchase another if one was made for the small size snaps. When you fasten 500 10m snaps a day maybe I should invent a small machine.

Not a good productI purchased this pliers set while making a series of tool bags. I've worked extensively with grommets and rivets and am familiar with the mechanics of distorting soft metal in order to "lock" two pieces of material (fabric or metal) together. I was excited to use this set to produce high-quality finished products. Instead, when I tried this using several of the size snaps included with, and recommend on, the package the pliers distorted the stems, the bases or the covers, and all while failing to securely lock the snaps in place. I am extremely dissatisfied and am returning them.

This product has been given a bad rapThis was the first time I have ever set snaps in my life. I only brought this product because I saw it in the store and was picking up some other little things. At first I couldn't figure out how to work it (initial fear), then I went to the internet to get some directions. I read all the bad reviews and thought maybe I should take it back to the store; or maybe these people don't know how to use it, so I gave it a try. It worked perfectly the first time and I was very proud of myself and my new friend the snap and eyelet setter. I would recommend this product. Not sure how it would work on a heavy fabric, but it worked fine for the summer dress I was making for my 6 year old granddaughter.

Instruction frustrationI needed something to set larger size eyelets and snaps in a quiet book I was making. Instructions were non-existent for the large eyelets which were supposed to be applied using this tool. It did work ok for eyelets that came with the tool. Would not buy again.

Great for the money! In my opinion, the directions are perfectly clear and the product does what it's supposed to. I was able to fasten a snap the first time I tried it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a cheaper alternative to a snap press.

I agreeI've had this tool a while and use it for commercial projects so I'm going through heavier fabrics, sometimes with fiberfill. It works fine...I agree with N. (10/27/05) - you DO have to really study the directions and they aren't very clear. Once I "got it" I was happy with results. It beats pounding snaps the old way although with Grandma's tip of using an old flat eraser or a thick piece of leather for cushioning on a concrete floor (!) that works too!!

not sure what the negativity is aboutI ordered this product with trepidation after reading the scathing reviews here.
I took it right out of the box to give it a try, and it works great. I agree that it does take a firm grip, so it is not ideal for anyone with hand problems, but honestly it is a good product that does what it is meant to do very well, putting in both eyelets and snaps.
So, don't be afraid to order it-- it works just fine, and the directions are perfectly clear. Now that I've used it, I'm really surprised at all the negative reviews, especially given that this seems to be the only widely available product that fulfills this function.

Practice Makes PerfectThe first line on the instruction card says "Test on swatch of fabric." Unfortunately, since the snaps aren't cheap, that line is probably often ignored. Then the "gotcha" is that illustration "A" is likely to result in the sockets being inserted into the tool backwards, which badly deforms the snap. However, the snap will usually still work, so the user is apt to conclude this is just a crummy tool. When the sockets and prongs are properly seated in the tool, it works just fine. Prym-Dritz would be wise to read these reviews as a valuable lesson about going cheap on instructions. In this case, that decision has probably damaged the prospects for what is really a fairly good tool.

Patience is a virtueBought it to make storage straps for our boat. It worked on the sample I tried, then I tried it on my project. Didn't work too good at first, but I was going through two layers of heavy material and elastic. Once I was able to start a whole the device worked like a dream. Takes a little (okay maybe a lot) of patience. I would recommend it, it worked for me.

WorthlessI bought this tool so I could use snaps on my baby's clothes but it does not work as intended. I wasted money not only on the kit but on the snaps too and all it did was ruined the clothes I was sewing for my baby.

Unreliable product!I bought this with high hopes; I'd been applying snaps to baby clothes with a pliers. Sadly, I'm back to the pliers.
This tool worked some of the time, but was unreliable and would result in a missapplied snap about 1 out of every 5 snaps applied. Now it won't work at all because of the cheap snap adapter that came with it.
I certainly would not buy this again. It may work well with larger snaps (I was using size 15 snaps, which are quite small) or with eyelets, but the "adapter" was ridiculous. I'm very disappointed.

It's better than nothing. This tool works crudely. I've used it to make eyelets, and set snaps. When the eyelets are installed, the reverse side of the eyelet doesn't splay out and grab the fabric evenly -- looks like it would pull of with normal wear. And the doughnut side of the die tends to cut into the top of the projectile side. As for the snaps, it's easy for the fabric and snap pieces to slip away from each other as you attempt to clamp down with two hands. I can't wait for something better to come along.

Not very user friendlyI wouldn't buy this item again. The instructions are horribly inadequate! The instructions are written in microscopic print fonts as well. Can't find help online with instructions/diagrams either. Not very intuitive and costs way more than it was worth.
